Reality Show do Cowboys?

IRVING, Texas - An upstart Pro Bowl quarterback who has gained overnight national celebrity. A flamboyant wide receiver whose introduction requires only a pair of initials. Arguably the most recognizable franchise in all of professional sports.

Sounds like the foundation for a Hollywood football movie script. Only this summer, HBO will make the Dallas Cowboys a reality-TV star - again.

HBO Sports, NFL Films and the Cowboys are teaming up once again for the fourth installment of "Hard Knocks," the all-access glance into the sweat-drenched world of NFL training camp. The series first chronicled the defending Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens back in 2001, followed by the Cowboys in 2002 and the Kansas City Chiefs in 2007.

This year, the "Hard Knocks" braintrust made a short list of candidates. At the top was America's Team.

"It's the No. 1, flagship franchise. It was our first choice," said Steve Sabol, NFL Films president. "Plus, they're a Super Bowl contender. When you have the Cowboys, plus how good they are, I wouldn't be doing my job if I didn't approach them first.

"In a way, this is our Super Bowl. Usually in the NFL you end with your biggest game. Well, this is our biggest game. We're starting with the biggest project - the most important, the most visible, the most publicized, the project we have committed our most resources in the beginning of the season."

"Hard Knocks: Training Camp With The Dallas Cowboys" premieres Wednesday, Aug. 6 at 9 p.m. (CDT), exclusively on HBO, with subsequent one-hour episodes in same time slot leading up to the Sept. 3 finale. Regular encores will air on Thursdays, along with the series being available on HBO On-Demand.

The five-episode series won't struggle for storylines. From Tony Romo to Terrell Owens to the pending reinstatement of Adam "Pacman" Jones, the Cowboys will pack its share of star power and drama for Oxnard, Calif., the site of this year's camp before the team heads back to San Antonio in 2009 to resume its contract with the Alamo City.

But HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg contends the show doesn't "manufacture reality." There's no pre-determined script or format; the producers want to unearth "80 stories," one for each player on the training camp roster.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is well aware of the franchise's innovative tradition that began with former president and general manager Tex Schramm. He views the "Hard Knocks" series as yet another cutting-edge concept that gives fans a personal look at the team's day-to-day operation - inside the players' and coaches' meeting rooms, training rooms and dorm rooms, from the front office execs to the fringe players fighting for a roster spot.

"There's no accident that the Cowboys are the No. 1 viewed team in the NFL, and by an impressive amount," Jones said. "We are No. 1, and it's because of that interest that I want to - on a personal basis, on behalf of the Cowboys - I want HBO to tell these stories."

Of course, a dozen extra cameras and microphones might create the potential for distractions. But Jones said his coaching staff hasn't voiced any concerns about the players staying focused during daily practices and meetings.

In fact, Sabol said NFL Films once chronicled the "Luv Ya Blue" Houston Oilers under Bum Phillips, father of Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips. And Cowboys secondary coach Dave Campo is no stranger to the series, having served as head coach the last time "Hard Knocks" invaded training camp in San Antonio.

"Of course, Camps is a star," Jones said.

The 24-person NFL Films crew will capture some 950 hours of high-definition video during camp and preseason and produce each show within a matter of days. Sabol called it "a six-week-long audible" that drastically cuts into his sleep.

But the HBO-NFL Films team expects the end product to be a ratings bonanza. The Cowboys hope it offers a sneak peek into making of a Super Bowl champion.

"It's fair to say this should go through the roof," Greenburg said. "This is a 13-3 team that most preseason picks are looking at the Cowboys. And I think with the characters and the storylines on this team, and the fact it is America's Team, I think this is going to be the highest rated."

Pra falar a verdade, as únicas matérias da NFL em português que vejo são as minhas e a dos BLogs de times. Já tô habituado com isso...

Quase todo ano tem. O reality é o processo de seleção das novas cheerleaders. É meio American Idol (só que a plateía não influencia em p* nenhuma, até porque não tem nada ao vivo).
